This illustration won first place in the second annual illustration contest at The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Conference / Carolinas in 2011. The prompt for the illustration was to take the standard nursery rhyme that starts with "One, two, buckle my shoe ... " and finish it with a different lyric. I wanted to depict an activity that was healthy, outdoors, and engaging for all involved.

The kids at Shaka Surf Camp practice their pop-ups, by drawing a surfboard in the sand, then going through the process to standing on their boards before they hit the waves.
